The Selamlık

The Selamlık (Mabeyn-i Hümâyûn) was the administrative center of the palace where state affairs were conducted. It is the most magnificent section of the palace, designed to impress foreign dignitaries and showcase the power of the Ottoman Empire.

Architectural Highlights

The section contains the most important halls of the palace, including the Crystal Staircase, the Ambassador's Hall, and the Red Room. The decoration reflects a synthesis of Ottoman tradition and Western artistic styles, featuring heavy gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and Hereke carpets.

The Crystal Staircase

One of the most famous features is the Crystal Staircase, which connects the ground floor to the upper floor. The staircase is built in a double horseshoe shape and its balustrades are made of Baccarat crystal and brass. The chandelier hanging above the staircase was also produced by Baccarat.

The Ceremonial Hall (Muayede Hall)

This is the largest and most magnificent hall in the palace, located between the Selamlık and the Harem. It covers an area of 2,000 square meters and has a 36-meter high dome. The 4.5-ton crystal chandelier hanging from the dome was a gift from Queen Victoria.
